Gloves

Gloves are an underappreciated piece of motorcycle riding equipment. Yes, they protect your hands, but have you ever thought about how important that is? On a motorcycle, many of the most important controls (like the brakes and throttle) are controlled by your hands. If you’re riding in cold weather or in the rain, your hands can quickly get extremely cold, and that will cause them to be less dextrous. You could be facing some serious control problems if you let your hands get too cold! Instead, choose insulated gloves with finger shielding to help protect your fingers.

Boots

Some people, especially those in warmer environments, tend to leave boots at home in favor for lighter, less insulated footwear. This isn’t a very good idea. Boots are extremely helpful to protect your feet from various factors. There’s the heat from the engine, rocks and debris from the road, rain and other forms of precipitation, and a few other things, too. Boots also provide good footing if you dump your bike on its side and need to lift it back up again.

Outerwear

Not all clothes are equally suited for motorcycle riding. Riding gear usually has some extremely helpful design features. Riding jackets are often carefully designed to offer the best in protection while also providing ventilation and comfort. Many riding jackets feature extra material or even protective pads on the shoulder and down the back. This protection is handy in a crash, and it can really save you from road rash. Under the arms and down the sides, these jackets may feature ventilation or mesh material that’s more breathable to help keep you at a comfortable temperature.

Riding pants are equally important. Having insulated riding pants will help to protect your legs from wind and sunburn, and it will also shield you from the heat from your engine. Waterproof riding pants keep you warm and insulated in rain storms.

You could also choose a one-piece riding suit if you want seamless protection from the elements. These suits can be somewhat more expensive, but the comprehensive coverage makes a big difference. It’s the best way to stay completely dry when you have to ride in the rain.

Neckerchief

A neckerchief really comes in handy when you’re riding in colder weather. That gap between your collar and helmet can become extremely cold and feel very unpleasant. Did you know a neckerchief can also be helpful when you’re riding in extremely hot weather, too? Simply soak it in cool water and as the water evaporates, the neckerchief will pull heat away from your neck.

Eye Protection

Having good eye protection will keep you much safer when you ride. If you buy a full face helmet, the eye protection will be included. But if you use a half or three-quarters helmet, you’ll want to get some quality sunglasses or goggles. Make sure yours have an anti-fog and anti-glare coating.
